coverage of the 2012 vote, and that means live, up- to-the-minute reporting from the nation, california and the bay area on election night. >>> lights are on. we're back up to west avenue. >> and livermore is now heavier. >> we don't mean to scare you on a saturday night, but yes, that's the sound of your morning drive. tonight we can tell you which bay area commuters have it worse than anyone else in the state of california. here's the story from contra costa. >> reporter: this is contra costa county traffic. on a regular weekday commute, it's the worst in the state. 32 minutes on average for most commuters. but for some, even longer. >> in terms of california, that's the longest. and there are also residents in contra costa county, more residents proportionally, commuting an hour or more to their jobs. >> reporter: joanne lynn compiled survey data and found what most of us already suspect. california traffic is bad. but not as bad as we may have thought. only the 10th worst in the nation. >> almost three quarters of us still tend to drive alone to our jobs. maybe 11% of us carpool. st

the death penalty in california. kron4's dan kerman is here in dan how are california leading? >> at this point the poll finds a majority of californians are in favor of repealing the death penalty and replacing it with life in prison without the possibility of parole. and while this is a reverse from poll numbers back in september the number of those expected to vote yes is a big enough for proportion 34 to pass. let's take a look at the numbers. the latest field poll of serving people at the end of october indicates 45 percent will vote yes, 30 percent felt no and 70 percent remained undecided. that is a significant change from early september when yes voters trilled spells opposed by 45 to the amount of 42%. >> usually when they learn more which is unique id is moving the other way. they are learning more about the initiative. and they could at most likely vote yes. >> 45 could not be enough. however, it will perhaps come down to the 70% of undecided. >> you talk about this measure is growing to have any indication about why the polls indicate that? >> it seems to be becaus

of the northeast, it's now a recovery mission. and yesterday california military planes were loaded with utility vehicles ready to be shipped into new york. an army of some 50,000 utility workers from across the country, even canada, being deployed to the region to help in the massive project to restore power which will take weeks. three navy warships are anchored off the northeast coast to help with the relief effort. in new jersey, military trucks are being deployed to operate as polling places on election day in the hardest-hit communities still remain without power. now, the good news does trickle out slowly. today amtrak will begin offering limited service between new york city and boston. and new jersey transit will also start moving today with limited service. the new york subway system continues to make advances. the "m" train linking queens to manhattan just started running, but there are still no trains running below 34th street where half of manhattan remains in the dark. so the millions of new yorkers who depend on subways, they're now waiting in those long lines for buses. for those

as california, they have pledged to start getting equipment crews, etc., here into new jersey and new york and connecticut as quickly as possible. and one of the things that we have been able to do, just to give you a sense of how this is an all hands deck approach, we're able to get c-17's, c-130's, military transport planes potentially to move assets, personnel to speed up the process of getting power up and running as soon as possible. our first priority is water filtration plants and some other critical infrastructure in the state. for that we've got emergency generators. we've got a navy ship that has some helicopters that can help to move assets around the state as well. and so we are going to be working with governor christi's office to identify the critical infrastructure and how we can get what's needed as quickly as possible. a couple other things we are concerned about, one is as power starts coming back on, we want to make sure that people can also get to work. obviously there are a lot of folks in jersey who work in new york, in the city, and in other places where transportati
